Where to stay in Marzamemi? The village is all walkable, while the surrounding coast offers beach and tranquility. Area by area, pros and cons.

Marzamemi is small: you can cross the village on foot in a few minutes. The real choice, when looking for where to stay, is another: to be inside the village, with the square and the harbor at your doorstep, or on the surrounding coast, where you gain beach, space, and silence but need a car for almost everything.

In this guide, you will find the areas one by one, who they are suitable for, and what they sacrifice. At the end, answers to the questions we are asked most often.

In brief: which area to choose

  • Want to go out in the evening on foot and experience the village → historic center of Marzamemi.

  • Beach holiday with children, convenient beach → Spinazza.

  • Close to the village but away from the hustle, towards the open sea → Porto Fossa area.

  • Coves, rocks, and tranquility towards Portopalo → Morghella.

  • Wide sandy beaches, close to Vendicari → San Lorenzo.

  • Space, wind, and open sea, far from the hustle → Granelli.

  • Countryside, space, and a base for exploring the Southeast → Pachino and surroundings.

How the territory is structured

Marzamemi is a fraction divided between two municipalities, Noto and Pachino, facing the Ionian Sea. To the north, the coast rises towards San Lorenzo and the Vendicari Reserve; to the south, it descends towards Morghella and Portopalo di Capo Passero, about 11 km away.

Pachino is inland, about 3 km away. Granelli is on the other side, on the southwestern coast of Pachino, about 12.6 km from the village.

To orient yourself with the distances from other Southeast destinations: Noto is 17 km away, Ortigia is 49 km away, Modica is 50 km away. All locations are gathered in the Marzamemi guide.

Staying in the village of Marzamemi

It’s the choice for those who want to step out of their home and find themselves in Piazza Regina Margherita, with the two churches, the Tonnara, and the harbor just steps away. In the evening, you can dine and stroll without worrying about parking and getting back.

Ideal for: couples, short stays, those traveling without a car or wanting to use it little.

To know: in the height of summer, the village is very busy and lively in the evening, so those seeking absolute silence may prefer the coast. The most convenient beaches, like Spinazza, are still reachable on foot.

A property in the area: Marlisa, boutique house with sea view in the heart of Marzamemi.

Spinazza: the sea of the village

The Spinazza is the coastline closest to the historic center: a long beach of fine sand with a gently sloping seabed and almost always calm water. There are free sections and sections with equipped beach clubs.

Ideal for: families with small children, those who want the beach at their doorstep and the village reachable on foot.

To know: in August, it is the most frequented beach in the area; to have space, it’s best to go early in the morning.

Properties in the area: L'Amuri Marzamemi with pool and Blu Marzamemi Rooms.

Porto Fossa Area: south of the village, towards Portopalo

South of the historic center, around the tourist port of Porto Fossa, begins the coast that descends towards Morghella and Portopalo. It’s the right area for those who want the village nearby but prefer to sleep outside the square, with the sea in front and less movement in the evening.

Ideal for: couples and families who want to alternate evenings in the village with quiet days by the sea.

To know: for evenings in the square, it’s still advisable to account for the car or a walk.

Structures in the area: Sapidimar, a seaside refuge, Casa Marsà with sea view, Coastal House and Sea Residence Luna Rossa.

Morghella: coves towards Portopalo

The bay of Morghella is located along the coast that descends from Marzamemi towards Portopalo: a succession of sandy inlets and rocky stretches, with very clear water. It is a quieter area of the village, with the old salt pans behind.

Ideal for: those seeking tranquility, snorkeling among the rocks, a comfortable base also for Portopalo and the Isola delle Correnti.

To know: to dine in the village, a car or a nice walk is needed.

A structure in the area: Brama Mare Apartment.

San Lorenzo: wide beaches near Vendicari

Just north of Marzamemi, already in the territory of Noto, San Lorenzo has light sandy beaches with a shallow bottom for several meters, organized beach clubs, and space for SUP and windsurfing. From here, the Vendicari Reserve and Noto are nearby.

Ideal for: beach holidays of one or two weeks, families, those who want to alternate beach time with excursions in the baroque of Noto.

To know: it is an area of villas and scattered houses: for the village, shopping, and evenings, a car is needed.

Granelli: open sea on the Pachino side

Granelli is located on the south-western coast of Pachino, thus on a different sea than that of the village: a wide beach of golden sand, more secluded, frequented by surfers when there is wind.

Ideal for: those seeking space and few crowds, those who practice water sports, those staying in a property with a pool and using a car to get around.

To know: at about 12.6 km from the village, it is the furthest area among those in this guide: keep this in mind if you want to spend evenings in the square often.

A structure in the area: Oasi del mare, apartments with pool.

Pachino and the countryside

Pachino, the land of the IGP cherry tomato, is just a few minutes' drive from Marzamemi. Staying in the town or in the surrounding countryside means having shops and services open all year round and more space, with the sea still just a few minutes away.

Ideal for: long stays, groups, those using Marzamemi as a base to explore the South-East.

To know: a car is essential.

A property in the area: Agri Lemon Green, a corner of serenity immersed in nature.

Practical tips before choosing

  • The car. In the village, you can almost do without it; in all other areas, it is necessary. Catania airport is about 100 km away (just over an hour's drive); Comiso airport is about 75 km away, with fewer connections.

  • When to move. July and August are the most requested months: those with fixed dates should contact hosts well in advance. June and September offer warm seas and fewer crowds.

  • Pool, garden, parking. If you need them, look for them especially outside the historic center, where spaces are larger.

On Marzamemi.com you can contact the host of the property you are interested in directly, with no commissions for guests. You will find all the listed properties on the holiday home map and on the Marzamemi page.

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to sleep in the village or outside?

It depends on how you will spend your days. If the center of your vacation is the evenings in the square and dinners by the port, the village has no alternatives. If you spend your days at the beach and want space, a pool, or silence, the coast is better, keeping in mind the need for a car.

What is the best area for a family with children?

La Spinazza and San Lorenzo: sandy beaches with a gently sloping shallow bottom and equipped beach clubs.

Is a car necessary for a vacation in Marzamemi?

No, for sleeping and enjoying the village. Yes, for all other areas and to visit Noto, Vendicari, Portopalo, or Modica.

How far is Marzamemi from Catania airport?

About 100 km, just over an hour's drive in normal traffic conditions.
